WATCH WHAT YOU READ - IPC and the trade in wild birds
Posted 1 July 2003
Animal Aid is calling on supporters to boycott IPC magazines as part of the campaign to end the UK's biggest bird fair.
IPC Media Ltd (International Publishing Company) is the UK's largest publishing house for lifestyle and hobbyist magazines. One of its publications, Cage & Aviary Birds, organises a massive annual bird sale at the NEC in Birmingham.
Last year it was estimated that more than 50,000 exotic birds on sale were captured in the wild. We know that for every bird who survived the brutal capture and transportation process, three others would have died on the way.
The wild bird trade threatens the survival of many exotic bird species, and events like the Cage & Aviary Birds sale drive the trappers ever deeper into the forests. It is the biggest event of its kind in the UK and you can help to persuade IPC Media Ltd not to organise any more.
Moreover, an outbreak of a budgerigar virus (see our letter to Solihull MBC) means that IPC Media should do like other event organisers and cancel the event.
You may sometimes purchase, or even subscribe to, one or more of the magazines listed below. Please write to the company and let them know that you will boycott their publications until they cease all involvement in the wild bird trade.
