Animals in slaughterhouses: government consultations

Posted 22 October 2012

A new law relating to the welfare of animals at slaughter comes into force in January 2013. This is a devolved issue, so the English, Welsh and Scottish governments have all issued different consultations to help them decide how best to implement the law in each country. Inevitably, some are better than others.

Shockingly, Question 20 of the English consultation asks: Do you agree that business operators [i.e. slaughterhouse owners] are best placed to decide which monitoring tools are most appropriate for their individual circumstances?

Instead of taking seriously Animal Aid's evidence of widespread abuses inside English slaughterhouses and cracking down hard on them, Defra, the government department responsible, plans to let slaughterhouses dictate how they would like to be monitored.

England

If you live in England, please respond to Question 20 of the consultation today (deadline Wednesday 24th). You can, of course, respond to additional questions, too.

Full information can be found here: http://www.defra.gov.uk/consult/2012/09/13/animal-welfare-killing/

Or simply send your response to Question 20 to: animalwelfareconsultations@defra.gsi.gov.uk.

Read Animal Aid’s response to the full consultation.

Scotland

If you live in Scotland, this is your consultation (closing date Friday 26th October): http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2012/08/9239/0

You can answer any or all questions but, if you cannot complete the full survey, we suggest you focus on Question 23 (which, shockingly, indicates that the Scottish Government plans to allow the slaughter industry dictate how it would like to be monitored), 24 and 26.

(Animal Aid's responses can be seen here, but please use your own words wherever possible.)

The Scottish Government requires a Respondent Information Form to be returned with all responses. It can be downloaded here: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2012/08/9239/downloads.

Please return your response, including the Respondent Information Form, to: Animal_Welfare_Consultations@scotland.gsi.gov.uk

Wales

If you live in Wales, this is your consultation (closing date Monday 5th November): http://wales.gov.uk/consultations/environmentandcountryside/120924protectionofanimals/

You can answer any or all questions but, if you cannot complete the full survey, we suggest you focus on Questions 5, 7 and 19.
(Animal Aid's responses can be seen here, but please use your own words wherever possible.)

You can download the Consultation Response Form, or email your responses to LivestockWelfare@wales.gsi.gov.uk.
