Ethical gifts: Don't send a cow, plant a tree

Animal Aid is leading a fundraising effort for aid charity HIPPO, which is co-ordinating a tree-planting project in Kenya that will provide food for local people.

The debate is heating up this year over donate-an-animal schemes. Andrew Tyler, our Director, wrote a piece for The Independent debunking these so-called 'ethical gifts', which triggered major articles on the subject in several national newspapers, as well as radio and television features. In fact, it was listed as the top story in The Times 'Public Agenda' list of hot topics. Far from helping the world's poorest people, providing cows, goats and other farmed animals to impoverished communities in Africa is making life there more difficult.
