My Story - The Life of a Dairy Cow
Posted 23 January 2013
The American-based organisation Mercy for Animals, recently teamed up with acclaimed artist Gretchen Ryan to create a powerful new film highlighting the plight of cows in the dairy industry. Filmed in the style of videos recorded by bullied teenagers on Youtube, ‘My Story’ gives an emotional account of the life of a dairy cow from her perspective.
Dairy cows are forcibly impregnated by artificial insemination on a regular basis to ensure they produce a continuous supply of milk. Their calves, who are effectively treated as a by-product, are often shot at a day old, or sent away to become veal – living short, miserable lives before being slaughtered. Some female calves will be kept to expand the herd and will be subject to the same cycle of mistreatment as their mothers.
