A five-minute 'video nasty', showing farmed animals being beaten, kicked and having their throats cut, is to be launched March 1 by Animal Aid to mark the beginning of the national pressure group's annual Veggie Month. Called Choose Life, Go Veggie, the film's harrowing images are made all the more poignant by the accompanying music, a track by global music phenomenon Moby, who has expressed his enthusiasm for the Animal Aid project.

The film's happy ending has a family contemplating the cruelty involved in meat production and resolving to go vegetarian.

The new video, to be shown by Animal Aid supporters around the UK, will be launched on Animal Aid's busy website,, on Thursday 1 March. Because thousands of young people visit the site every month, the video comes with a warning for parental guidance.

On a more upbeat note, Animal Aid's Veggie Hotline will be operating throughout March, offering a package of free resources. Centrepiece is a colour booklet called GOING VEGGIE: The lazy gourmet's guide to kicking the meat habit. It is designed to help new vegetarians taking their first animal-free steps. The Veggie Hotline number is 01732 354 032.

Both the video and the 12-page, A5-format GOING VEGGIE guide make exciting additions to the Veggie Month campaign, now in its 12th year. As in previous years, schools, health food shops, libraries and health centres across the UK will be displaying and distributing the printed resources. Animal Aid supporters will also be making them available from high street stalls and outside supermarkets.

Other special national and regional events will be announced as Veggie Month unfolds.

Said Kay Holder, Animal Aid's vegetarian campaigner:

"Our new film, in the space of a few minutes, shows the bloody truth behind the meat industry. There's never been an easier time to Go Veggie."
