Meat-Free Monday
The idea of having one meat-free day per week has been around for a while, but is taking off under the Meat-Free Monday campaign, launched by Paul McCartney and his daughters Stella and Mary, supported by a whole cast of celebrities. Animal Aid thinks this campaign is a good idea, as we recognise that some people might find the idea of going vegetarian or vegan right away overwhelming. By trying it one day a week, you will soon see how easy and tasty it is!
Why go meat-free? Because animal farming is extremely wasteful – it uses up huge amounts of land, energy and water – and many more people could be fed if we put these resources towards growing crops for plant-based diets. Animal farming is also responsible for more global greenhouse gas emissions than produced by the whole of the transport sector worldwide! Reducing how much meat you eat will also lower your risk of developing illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. And on top of all this, you will be saving animals’ lives as well!
Ask your school canteen to participate, by making Mondays’ menus entirely meat-free. For other veggie campaigning ideas, visit the Get Active section.
