Fur
More than 40 million animals are killed each year so that their fur can be turned into luxury items such as coats, hats and even toys. Some of these animals are trapped in the wild, while others are reared and killed on fur farms.
The leather trade kills more than a billion animals (mainly cows but also pigs, goats, sheep, kangaroos and even cats and dogs) for their skins each year. Many people think that leather is ‘just‘ a by-product of the meat trade, but buying leather actually helps to support the factory farming and killing of animals, as it makes the meat industry profitable.
In 2002 the UK government banned fur farming in the UK. However, fur garments are still imported and sold in the shops.
