First steps to going veggie

cover of the Young Veggie booklet
  1. Find out more. This website is a good start. Download or order some of our factsheets, booklets and leaflets:
  2. Give it a go. Not everyone finds it easy going completely veggie overnight. You can do it gradually. Try cutting down on the amount of meat you eat over several weeks or months. You could try taking the Veggie or Vegan Pledge and doing a sponsored veggie or vegan week. This is a great way to try out going veggie and help raise money to support Animal Aid’s campaigns at the same time!
  3. Make sure you are catered for. If you don't make your own meals at home, show whoever does some of our info (leaflets, factsheets and booklets) and suggest some veggie versions of your favourite meals for them to make. Show them some of our Veggie recipes. If your school canteen doesn’t have enough good veggie meals, ask them to provide some more.
  4. Hit the shops. Check out your local health food shops and supermarkets to see what veggie foods they have on offer. Most large supermarkets have vegetarian options in their freezer and chiller cabinets labeled as suitable for vegetarians/vegans, such as veggie burgers, sausages, pizzas, lasagne and pies, which you can heat up and have instead of meat. If there is a health food shop near you with a freezer section or chiller cabinet, then these are also great places to stock up. What to buy and where to shop.
  5. Get creative. Experiment with cooking veggie versions of your favourite foods. Have some fun trying some new foods and recipes. Send us a copy of your favourite recipe so we can feature it on this website. Download our Veggie recipes.
  6. Spread the veggie word. See if you can persuade your friends and family to drop meat too. We can provide you with leaflets, booklets, recipes, posters and veggie pledge forms. See our Campaign resources
