Campaigning against Animals in Captivity
- Ask your teacher if you can have a speaker from Animal Aid to talk about the zoos and circuses. Find out more about school talks .
- Ask if you can do a display at school about zoos and/or circuses. Find out more about doing library displays.
Zoos
Avoid visiting zoos, safari parks or aquaria. If you do visit one, study the animals. If they look like they are unhappy or behaving unnaturally, write to the zoo to complain. Take pictures. Tell us, too, if you are concerned about anything you see in a zoo.
Circuses
Don’t visit circuses that have performing animals.
If a circus with animals visits your area, here’s what you can do:
- Write a letter to your local newspaper, asking people to boycott the circus and explain why.
- Ask local shops that have circus posters on display to take them down. Contact us for some leaflets to show the shopkeeper.
- If the circus has been ‘fly posting’ or attaching notices to barriers at road crossings, complain to your local council.
- If you would like to organise a protest against the circus – contact us for guidance and advice.
See the action alert and write a polite message to your MP, asking that he or she contacts Hilary Benn (Secretary of State for the Environment) calling for a total ban on all performing animals in circuses. See points to cover in your email/letter.
