Veggie food at school
Organise a Veggie Week (or Vegan Week)
Every year in March Animal Aid organises Veggie Month. This is when we focus on promoting vegetarianism. This is a great opportunity to do something in school on the issue. Ask the catering staff if you can work with them on organising a Veggie Week in school during March. November, which is Vegan Month, would be a good time to organise a Vegan Week in school. Ask your tutor/form teacher for help.
The Veggie Week could involve:
- having a special veggie dish in the canteen each day
- for the library, school foyer, canteen
- arranging for a speaker from Animal Aid to give a talk and give a cookery demonstration in food technology classes
- having a stall in the entrance to the canteen, corridor or outside, with recipe sheets, factsheets, leaflets and other information available. You should also have sponsor forms so people can take the Veggie Pledge.
Contact us to order posters, leaflets, sponsor forms, recipe sheets, etc and for any help or advice.
Get more veggie meals onto the school menu
Your school may already have a great selection of veggie meals on offer. If not, ask the catering manager to add more to the menu. We can send you some recipes and a veggie catering info pack to show the school how it can do healthy veggie meals on a budget. If they say ‘no’, don’t give up. Speak to your tutor/form teacher and the headteacher to see if he or she is sympathetic to your request. Tell them that veggie food is healthy! You could get a petition going to gain support from students who would like to see more variety on the menu.
