And it's goodbye from Amanda

Amanda (second on the left) has been a Youth Rage regular, but is now leaving Youth4Animals and Latymer School in London to move on to the ‘adult’ world. She’s coordinated the Animal Rights Society at Latymer for the past two years. In the past academic year, the society organised talks with speakers from Animal Aid, SPEAK Campaigns and Europeans for Medical Progress. They held debates on various issues, such as animal testing, the use of animals in war, and the ethical arguments surrounding religious slaughter. There were displays and events for World Vegan Day and Animal Aid’s Veggie Month, including encouraging other students to take the veggie week pledge, while Amanda herself had a month off from processed veggie food.

The Society has its own website at to inform students about animal rights issues and encourage debate.

For World Day for Laboratory Animals, the Society used a unique method to make sure fellow students were aware of how many animals are used in vivisection: they wore bunny ears and had a live tally of how many animals would lose their lives through the lunch hour.

The Society collected signatures against the Canadian Seal Hunt and Amanda attended the petition hand-in at Canada House with other members of Youth4Animals. Through various fundraising activities, including a vegan cake sale, the society raised more than £70 for Animal Aid!

These are all great ideas that you can try at your school. Just contact us if you need any help. We look forward to working with the new organiser of the Animal Rights Society at Latymer. Good luck with whatever you choose to do in the future, Amanda. The animals are lucky to have you on their side!
