Introducing Maddy: Essex campaigner

Maddy

Maddy contacted us in June with an entry to our fundraising competition (though she hopes to add more to her total over the summer). Maddy is 17 and a sixth-former at The Billericay School. She’s been a vegan for just over two years. Here’s what she has to say for herself:

“Back then [when she was 15] I thought that [going vegan] was a great contribution to animal rights and standing up for what I believe in, but later I realised I could do more to not only play my part in animal activism but to get other people to also. So I looked on the 'Campaign' section on the Animal Aid website and looked for a petition I could get as many people involved in as possible. This led to me finding the petition on Warfare experiments on animals, which is an extremely horrible subject that I find very upsetting and I wanted to make other people aware of it as well. So I printed off the petition and decided to take it round my school during my free time to educate people of all ages on the subject and get them to donate. After going round the playgrounds, teachers’ rooms and other areas of the school for about a week, I managed to collect £29.30 and countless amounts of signatures with some people just donating a small fund of 1p, but it all adds up and I am grateful to all the students who donated and took their time to listen to me. There’s no doubt I’ll do more petitions in the near future, along with any other means of donation and animal activism I can get my hands on.”

We’re looking forward to hearing more from Maddy in the future, and to see if she manages to raise more for our Fundraising Competition.
