World Vegan Month: How and why to celebrate

Veganism means no longer contributing to industries that harm and exploit animals and instead using your consumer power to shape a kinder, fairer future for all - and when better to begin, than World Vegan Month!

Why celebrate World Vegan Month?

We now know that a vegan diet is better for our health, better for the planet, and is the number one way to save thousands of animals from unimaginable suffering. And yet, society is still set up to prioritise profit over the lives and wellbeing of animals and the natural world – and this mindset is detrimental to all of us. That’s why World Vegan Month is more important than ever.

Most of us want animals to be treated well and will care for those we come into contact with, whether it’s our animal companions or the wildlife in our gardens. But profit-driven industries, like big animal agriculture, intentionally mislead us into doing the opposite. In the UK around 1.2 billion individuals are killed for food, with most enduring unimaginable suffering.

We’ve all seen images of starving polar bears, or great swathes of forest lost to wildfire, and felt a deep sense of sadness at the crisis facing the planet.

We might feel hopeless, believing there is little we can do to help – but that’s exactly how profit-driven industries, like big animal agriculture, want us to feel. They don’t want us to tell you that the production of meat and milk is incredibly resource-heavy, stealing vast amounts of land and water and leaving a trail of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

What else is the farming industry hiding from us?

It’s easy to feel confused about what’s best for our health with so many conflicting studies and headlines. While most of us want to make choices that are good for us and don’t harm others, the farming industry goes to great lengths to deliberately mislead us. They tell us that animal products are key to a healthy diet, yet major health organisations – like the British Dietetics Association – say that a happy, healthy life is entirely possible without consuming the meat and milk of animals.

Better health is possible, and it’s possible without harming animals or exploiting the natural world.
