In 2002, the UK became the first country to ban the practice of fur farming, yet imports have continued to this day, with an estimated annual value of £30-40 million – around one million animals.
Today’s petition hand-in demonstrated public support for a ban, with 1.5 million signatures, and comes ahead of next week’s parliamentary reading of the Fur (Import and Sale) Bill, which is set to take place on Friday 13 June. Â
The trade of fur from cats, dogs and seals is already banned but, if successful, the Fur (Import and Sale) Bill will extend this ban to other species including foxes, mink, and racoon dogs, all of whom are heavily exploited by the fur industry.Â
