Kameko

Kameko might not have faced the high fences of jump racing, but that doesn't mean his life's been any easier. This is his story.

My name isĀ Kameko, and IĀ amĀ record-breaker, a champion, and the father of childrenĀ I’llĀ neverĀ meet.Ā

I’veĀ just turned 9 years old, but my life has feltĀ very longĀ so far.Ā I was taken from my mother when I wasĀ an infantĀ to be put into training, and at just 2 years old my racing ā€˜career’ began. I was a flat racing horse, which means IĀ didn’tĀ have to face the danger of fences and hurdles like other horses, but thatĀ doesn’tĀ mean my world is a kind one.Ā

They taught me to go fast,Ā soĀ that’sĀ what I did.Ā In 2020 I became the fastest ever winner of the 2,000 Guineas and without knowing it I sealed my fate as a breeding stallion.Ā

The next year I was sent to stud, where I’ve been ever since. A constant stream of mares is brought to me to ā€˜cover’. She’s tied down as I mount her, then I’m taken away and not long after the whole process is repeated with a different mare.Ā

ItĀ shouldn’tĀ be like this. Horses like to choose ourĀ partners. We court each other,Ā stallionsĀ prancing to get a mare’s attention, and then coming in for an affectionate nuzzle beforeĀ theyĀ mate.Ā AfterwardsĀ we can live together as a herd, not separated off to live in separate stables, alone and unloved.Ā

My children areĀ oftenĀ sold beforeĀ they’reĀ even born –Ā before theyĀ canĀ climb to their feet and open their eyes their fates are sealed like mine was. They will be taken from their mothers and made to run.Ā

There is no way out for horses like us. We either run so fast that we become tooĀ valuable, and our future is to have our bodies used for breeding, or weĀ don’tĀ run fast enough andĀ we’reĀ discarded.Ā I wish I could run one last time – away from the ropes and the harnessesĀ that constrain us to a life of sexual servitude.Ā People thought I was fast in 2020 when I broke the record, but I would run so much fasterĀ if I couldĀ run to freedom.Ā

My nameĀ is Kameko. I am someone.Ā

No animal should suffer for sport yet horses are still the only animal who can be legally beaten for entertainment. Will you help?
