Universities Challenged

In 2020, 54% of experiments on animals were conducted at universities and medical schools. Our Universities Challenged campaign hold these institutions to account.

Which UK universities experiment on animals?

Our Universities Challenged campaign scrutinises publicly available information about animal experiments at UK universities and promotes lawful, respectful engagement to support transparency and progress. Although these experiments are not required by law, in 2020 they made up 54% of non-regulatory research on animals.

We believe universities, as establishments dedicated to future generations, should be at the forefront of cutting-edge, animal-free research methods rather than relying on cruel and outdated experiments. Future-proofing the next generation of scientists shouldn’t involve the suffering of millions of animals.

Our interactive map shows where animal experiments are taking place across UK universities. Search your university, explore the data, and see how they compare.

Our information was gathered under the Freedom of Information Act and sheds light on the number of animals being abused in towns and cities across Britain.

The Universities Challenged campaign can be used by all students, whatever they are studying, because they deserve to know how their tuition fees are being spent.
