Victims of Charity

Some of the biggest names in the charity sector are conducting or funding experiments on animals - experiments that are cruel and unreliable.

Which charities?

Our Victims of Charity campaign, launched more than a decade ago, focuses on medical charities funding or conducting experiments on animals.

Sadly, some of the biggest names in the charity sector are involved in harming and killing animals – research that is not only cruel and outdated but also futile, as experiments on animals cannot be reliably applied to human patients.

The Victims of Charity campaign sheds light on the organisations that support animal cruelty in the name of science, urging people not to donate or support them.

Importantly, it also highlights those that do not support this cruelty, directing their resources towards animal-free research or to helping those living with medical conditions in other ways.

What's wrong with charities funding experiments on animals?

What are Animal Aid doing?

Regardless of their species or the reason for harming them, experimenting on animals can never be justified. Harming animals to advance humanity – whether for healthcare, cosmetic or warfare experiments – is inhumane and not part of the kinder, fairer world that most of us aspire to.

Using animals in science is also potentially harmful to people. Animals do not get the same diseases that we do, so symptoms must be induced artificially: a flawed concept for any experiment. The cure, therefore, is also different, so continuing to invest in animal experiments, diverting money away from research that is human-relevant, is nonsensical as well as cruel.

Medical research charities play an important role in human health; yet many continue to conduct or fund invasive experiments on animals, despite their unreliability. Our Victims of Charity campaign, which publishes the names of these charities, exposes the research they have supported and dispels some of the secrecy surrounding it.

We believe the public should know what their donations are paying for. Together, we can persuade medical charities to move away from cruel and unreliable experiments on animals towards progressive, kinder and more effective human-relevant research.

Mice are often forgotten in the campaign to end experiments on animals. Our Mice Matter campaign seeks to change that.
