The attrition rate of fallers from the outset of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival has again highlighted the dangers horses face when racing.
A second victim Born Patriot, a 6-year-old, was killed during the Pertemps Final race on the third day of the four-day meeting. A third victim was Mindsmadeup, an 11-year-old bay gelding who fell in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Chase. Their deaths come after the young race horse Shallwehaveonemore was killed in the first race at the 2022 event.
Says, Animal Aid’s Horse Racing Consultant, Dene Stansall:
‘Born Patriot and Mindsmadeup are victims of an industry that hides its dead horses behind dark screens whilst it celebrates the horses who win the races. The glamour of the racing coverage suggests the race results, the betting market and the attendees’ personalities are more important than the horses who suffer. Shame on racing coverage, shame on the racing industry.’
