A fire across two sheds at a farm in Wiltshire has killed more than 750 pigs, including 700 piglets. Eight fire engines were called to the scene, but fire fighters were unable to rescue the animals.
Whilst it is unclear at this stage what caused this particular blaze, farm fires are very common due to a combination of minimal fire regulations, poor enforcement and a lacklustre attitude towards health and safety amongst many farmers. Thousands of animals die in such fires each year, including 4,300 pigs on a farm in Northern Ireland in 2014 and 140,000 chickens on a farm in Kent in 2012.
