Demonstration held against Canada geese cull

On Saturday, local campaigners held a highly successful demonstration against the announcement by the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) that it does intend to go ahead with a cull of 200 Canada geese on Lake Windermere.

Up to 200 people turned up to send a strong message to the LDNPA that they do not want this cruel and unjustifiable cull to take place. The geese, absurdly, are being blamed for massive pollution and environmental damage to the lake. This is despite the fact that large quantities of human sewage and farm chemicals and slurry continue to be dumped and washed into Windermere. Furthermore, the LDNPA also admits that ‘Windermere has had no specific studies regarding the effects of Canada geese on local habitat’.

Saturday’s demonstration attracted a lot of media coverage, and tourists are now being urged to boycott the Lake District following the decision to kill the geese.
