A new education and research initiative, announced by the Dr Hadwen Trust, will see the UK lead a collaborative global search for non-animal research techniques to replace animal use in medical research.
The Dr Hadwen Trust will be funding the world’s first Professorial Chair in animal replacement science, thanks to a £1 million legacy left by a lifelong supporter. The Chair will be based at the Blizard Institute, part of Queen Mary, University of London, a recognised pioneer in the development of in vitro models using human cells and tissue.
It is hoped that the Chair will create links between scientists in the sector, and that related educational programmes will inspire more young people to choose a career in animal replacement science.
