Giovinco (IRE), a 7-year-old, and Pikar (FR), also 7, were tragically killed today on the second day of The Grand National Meeting. This brings the number of horses killed at this 3 day meeting up to 65 since 2000.
Animal Aid is disgusted that two more lives have been needlessly lost at this notorious event. Despite the industry’s new welfare initiative ‘Horse PWR’, these latest fatalities highlight the inherent danger within racing. 1 in 58 horses are killed each season in jumps racing – all in the name of ‘entertainment’.
Pikar was killed when he broke his neck after a fall, following the death of Giovinco earlier today who was also killed from a fall.
